Dr. Dennis Sale

Medical Clinic Founder & Medical Director at The LEO Center

The Medical Clinic at The LEO Center (also known as Heartland Medical Clinic) is a full-service, Christian oriented and supported, immediate care medical clinic providing a wide range of health care services to people in Lawrence and surrounding communities regardless of their ability to pay.

Founded by Dr. Dennis Sale and his wife, Mikki, on October 22, 1999, the clinic originally opened in the lobby and nursery of Heartland Community Church, an evangelical church in downtown Lawrence. Five patients were seen that day by Dr. Sale and Pat Mayo, a volunteer nurse.

In the years that have transpired since then, the Medical Clinic at The LEO Center has seen remarkable growth and progress. The clinic has served as many as 500 patients per month. Its staff members are trained and coached to assist in the provision of outstanding health care services. Patients who need assistance and guidance with their faith journey and non-medical needs are then nurtured and given guidance in a caring, compassionate Christian manner through the other parts of The LEO Center.

The medical clinic is legally organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and provides discounted medical care, spiritual encouragement, and social agency referrals to those in need without regard to socio-economic status, race, gender, age, religion, nationality, or disability. In 2003, the clinic provided over $150,000 in free medical care and medicine. In 2004, the amount climbed to more than $500,000. For 2005, the total climbed to over $1 million.

The board of directors hopes to continue increasing the medical care and education offered through the Medical Clinic at The LEO Center in the years ahead, particularly because the need for discounted or free medical services in Lawrence and its surrounding communities is growing, and there is still a significantly large under-served population. Current estimates suggest that there are still 9,000 to 12,000 people not receiving adequate medical services in the Lawrence area alone.
